The Sigma Pi Educational Foundation had its beginning in 1947 when Honorary Grand Sage Byron R. Lewis, '05, of Alpha and Phi Chapters gave Sigma Pi several monetary gifts. It had been his hope and recommendation that the money would be used to begin a fund for educational purposes.
In 1952, the Byron R. Lewis Educational Fund was established. The purposes of the corporation as stated in its Articles of Incorporation are: to assist and supplement the work of colleges in the educational development of students; to assist needy and deserving students to complete their education; and to aid aged or disabled former students who are in need or worthy of assistance.
Upon a vote of the members of the corporation in 1992, the Fund changed its name to the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation. Under the Foundation's constitution, any member of Sigma Pi in good standing may become a member of the Educational Foundation by making a $100 membership contribution.
By 1970, $11,000 had been provided to support the purposes of the fund. In 1980, the assets of the corporation had grown to$156,000. By 2000, the Foundation's assets topped 2.3 million dollars. The Educational Foundation's growth and ability to support the members of Sigma Pi would not be possible without the continuous gifts of alumni and friends. Gifts to the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation are tax-deductible.
The Board of Trustees, elected by the members of the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation, manage the corporation. For further information about the Educational Foundation or its programs, Contact Us.
